Semiconductor cleanrooms

Controlled Environment

Cleanrooms are designed to maintain strict control over temperature, humidity, and air quality. The level of cleanliness is typically classified according to international standards, such as ISO 14644-1 or US Federal Standard 209E, which specify the maximum allowable particle counts for different cleanroom classes

Particle Control

Particle contamination is a major concern in semiconductor manufacturing, as even tiny dust particles can damage or affect the performance of microelectronic components. Cleanrooms use advanced air filtration and purification systems to minimize particle contamination

Cleanroom Classes

Cleanrooms are classified into different classes, ranging from Class 1 (the cleanest) to Class 9 (the least clean), based on the maximum allowable particle count per unit volume. The semiconductor industry typically requires Class 1 to Class 100 cleanrooms.

Positive Air Pressure

Cleanrooms are usually maintained at a higher air pressure than the surrounding areas, which helps prevent the entry of contaminants from outside. Airlocks and gowning areas are often used to control the ingress and egress of personnel and equipment.

Advanced Ventilation Systems

Cleanrooms use advanced HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems with HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) and ULPA (Ultra-Low Penetration Air) filters to remove particles and control temperature and humidity.
